Hey Reader, There's a specific kind of paralysis that hits PMs more than almost any other professional. You have the idea. You have the skill. You might even have the time. But you're still waiting for permission. Not money. Not a team. Just someone to officially ask you to do the thing. It makes sense. Every system you've worked in has trained this reflex. Change control. Governance boards. Sponsor sign-off. Your entire career has rewarded the discipline of not moving until someone with authority said go. That muscle is so developed it fires automatically now, even when there's no organisation around you. Even when it's just you and an idea and a blank page. So the idea sits. Here's the problem: the brief is never coming. Not for your best work. Not for the thing that's actually worth building. No one is going to commission the version of you that exists outside your job description. That version has to self-authorise. I've been watching this pattern play out in myself. The World Cup app I shipped a few weeks back didn't come with a project initiation document. OpenClaw, the AI agent system I've been building for months, had no sponsor, no budget approval, no steering committee. Both started the same way: I wrote the brief myself. Literally. Objectives, constraints, what done looks like, who it's for. One page. The same document I'd produce for a client, written for myself. That small act does something important. It converts "I should probably do something with this" into a concrete, scoped piece of work. It makes the idea real in the only language your PM brain fully trusts. And it removes the last excuse. Because once it's scoped, the only thing left is to start. Your challenge this week: Pick the thing you've been sitting on. The idea from last week's question, the side project, the thing you keep mentioning to people but never move on. Write a one-page brief for it. Objectives. Constraints. What done looks like. Owner: you. Don't build it yet. Just scope it. If you want someone to pressure-test your brief, reply to this email. I want to see what's in the pipeline. See you next week. |
